Mecca Compass Privacy Policy

# Privacy Policy for meccacompass

Effective date: May 27, 2026

Last updated: May 27, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Mekkakompass („the App“, „we“, „us“, or „our“) handles information when you use the App. The App helps you determine the Qibla direction and distance to Mecca by using your device location and compass sensors.

## Summary

Mekkakompass is designed to work without accounts, advertising, analytics SDKs, or our own backend server. The App does not sell personal data, does not use personal data for advertising, and does not track you across apps or websites.

The App processes your current location on your device to calculate the Qibla direction and distance to Mecca. Your location is not uploaded to our servers. If you open the map view, your device requests map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap, which may receive technical request data such as your IP address and the map tile areas requested.

Using a Qibla compass app may indicate an interest in religious direction finding. We do not create user profiles, infer religious beliefs, or store religious information about you.

## Information We Process

### 1. Location Data

The App requests access to your device location while you use the App. Location data may include precise location data, depending on the permission you grant and the accuracy provided by your device.

We use location data only to:

– calculate the Qibla direction from your current position;

– calculate the distance between your current position and Mecca;

– show your current position in the map view.

Location data is processed on your device. We do not operate a server that receives, stores, or analyzes your location data. The App may keep your current location in memory while the App is running so it can display the compass, distance, and map correctly.

### 2. Compass and Device Sensor Data

The App reads compass heading data from your device to point the compass and Qibla indicator in the correct direction. Compass readings are processed on your device and are not sent to us.

### 3. Local Preferences

The App stores a small number of preferences locally on your device, such as:

– selected language preference;

– selected compass indicator style.

These preferences are stored using your device’s local app storage. They are not sent to us and remain on your device until you change them, clear the App data, or uninstall the App.

### 4. Map Tile Requests

The App’s map view loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap at:

https://tile.openstreetmap.org

When the map view is used, your device connects directly to OpenStreetMap servers. OpenStreetMap may receive technical information such as your IP address, app or browser user agent, device or operating system information, date and time of requests, and the map tile coordinates requested. Because the map view is centered around your position and Mecca, tile requests may reveal the approximate area shown on the map.

OpenStreetMap is operated independently from us. Its handling of information is described in the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy and related service information:

– https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy

– https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Services_and_tile_users_privacy_FAQ

### 5. App Store and Platform Data

If you download or update the App through an app store, the store operator, such as Google Play or Apple App Store, may process information about your download, device, account, purchase history, crash reports, or store interaction according to its own privacy policy. We do not control those platform processes.

The current App does not include our own analytics, advertising, push notification, account, payment, or crash reporting SDK.

## Permissions Used by the App

The App may request or use the following permissions:

– Location permission: used to calculate the Qibla direction, distance to Mecca, and to show your location on the map.

– Internet access: used to load map tiles from OpenStreetMap.

– Compass / sensor access: used to determine your device heading for the compass display.

The App is not designed to track your location in the background.

## Purposes of Processing

We process information only for the following purposes:

– providing the App’s compass, Qibla direction, distance, and map features;

– saving your local App preferences;

– maintaining basic App functionality and compatibility with your device;

– complying with applicable legal obligations, if any.

We do not use personal data for advertising, profiling, behavioral tracking, or automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

## Legal Bases for Users in the EEA, UK, or Similar Jurisdictions

Where applicable data protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on:

– your consent, where your operating system asks you to grant location permission;

– performance of a service you request, where location and sensor data are needed to provide the compass, distance, and map features;

– legitimate interests, where local preferences and basic technical operations are necessary to provide a reliable App experience;

– legal obligations, where processing is required by applicable law.

You can withdraw location permission at any time through your device settings. If location permission is disabled, the App may not be able to calculate the Qibla direction or distance from your current position.

## Sharing of Information

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your personal data with advertisers or analytics providers.

Information may be made available to third parties only in these limited situations:

– OpenStreetMap: when you use the map view, your device requests map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap as described above.

– App stores and operating system providers: Google, Apple, or the relevant platform provider may process data independently when you install, update, or use platform services.

– Legal compliance: if we are legally required to respond to a lawful request or protect legal rights.

We do not have access to OpenStreetMap’s server logs and cannot delete or modify information held by OpenStreetMap.

## Retention

We do not store your location, compass readings, or map activity on our servers.

– Current location and compass readings are kept only temporarily in App memory while needed for App functionality.

– Local preferences remain on your device until you change them, clear App data, or uninstall the App.

– OpenStreetMap and app store providers retain data according to their own policies.

## Your Choices and Controls

You can control data use in the following ways:

– revoke or change location permission in your device settings;

– disable location services on your device;

– avoid opening the map view if you do not want your device to request map tiles from OpenStreetMap;

– clear the App’s local data through your device settings, where supported;

– uninstall the App to remove locally stored App preferences from your device.

## Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, portability, or information about how your personal data is handled. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Because the App does not create accounts and we do not store App usage data on our servers, we may not be able to identify you or retrieve device-local data from our side. If you contact us with a privacy request, we may ask for enough information to understand and respond to your request.

For data processed independently by OpenStreetMap, Google, Apple, or another platform provider, please contact that provider directly.

## Children

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13, or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us, please contact us so we can review and respond appropriately.

## Security

We use a data-minimizing design: the App does not require an account and does not send your location to our own servers. Information stored locally on your device is protected by your device’s operating system and security settings. No method of electronic processing or transmission is completely secure, but we limit the data handled by the App to what is necessary for its functions.

## International Transfers

The App may be used worldwide. If you use the map view, your device may connect to OpenStreetMap infrastructure located in different countries. App stores and platform providers may also process data in different countries according to their own policies.

## Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the „Last updated“ date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice through the App or app store listing.
